June 2014: The Large Model Association's Strathaven Air Show

The last weekend of June was the date for this year's Strathaven Air Show, organised by the Large Model Association. This annual event is an opportunity for members of the public to watch some spectacular flying from large radio controlled models. Here are a few images from the display on Saturday 28th June, starting with some models waiting for their turn to fly:

On to some flying models next, with a selection of non-scale models, including the jet powered Reaper and Boomerang:

The following photos show the North American OV-10 Bronco, which flew nicely and landed well, despite one engine having stopped!:

Next to display were a pair of WWI Fokkers:

The next display was an impressive example of "3d" flying, including the model "prop hanging" (hovering):

A more sedate display followed, with a graceful flight of the scale Fournier RF-4D G-AWEM. The pilot appeared to be "The Stig"!:

One of the display highlights next, a beautiful scale model of the distinctive Vought Corsair:

The final flight I witnessed was the best - a huge scale model of the English Electric Lightning, powered by two jet turbine engines. The flight on Saturday initially encountered a few problems, with a fire on engine start up and a failure of the nose wheel steering. Once these issues had been resolved the model took flight and looked fantastic - unfortunately the weather then took a turn for the worse so the flight was cut short, but it was well worth waiting for and the Lightning looked incredibly realistic flying around the skies of Strathaven:

An excellent day out with some very impressive models on display - hopefully this event will be repeated again next year.
